The ‘Epic’ Channel Trailer

I finally got around to making a trailer for our youtube channel and as it’s taken so long to finally get around to doing it I wanted it to be something that’s a bit different. It had to be funny, it had to be surprising, it had to be memorable, it had to be… EPIC.

Initially it was just going to be us giving a talking intro and then showing some clips from our channel but that was never going to do it for us really. While browsing around the web looking at fonts I came across a photo of cool 80’s looking chrome logo. Since I was a teenager in the 80’s and loved the action movies of that era an idea began to form in my mind. I wanted to try and make a trailer that felt a bit like those 80’s movies but still using footage from our channel to show viewers what we are all about. That’s how the EPIC trailer came to be.

I started with creating the title in the same chrome look that inspired it and from there started thinking what else would fit with the theme. Appropriate music would be an important component and I came across the perfect piece of music on Youtube made by a guy called Philip Chance. What else would fit? Explosions of course! I got some really nice royalty free explosions and sound effects to go with the theme. Photoshop was used to create the intro graphics and the rest of the titles. The last thing to create was the voice-over and and that was done using Audacity.

After all the pieces were created it was simply a process of putting it all together. The whole process took about 3 evening after work and we are fairly happy with how it turned out. It succeeded in most of the hopes I had for it but there are still a lot of room for improvement. I am just a beginner still with Photoshop, editing and visual effects and bearing that in mind I’m satisfied with what was created. From now on though things can only get better.

I started using OBS about a week or so ago when Racel wanted to do a live stream and I thought it would look a bit more professional to do it with OBS. As always when trying to learn something new I took to Youtube to figure out how it work but I soon discovered that most of the videos only explained certain parts of it and left out a lot of the basics that a new user like me should know. Also, during Racel’s stream so many people were asking how she did it that I decided to create my own tutorial to help absolute beginners like myself.

The video turned out to be quite a bit longer than I envisioned but that’s because I wanted to make sure to cover the concepts on which the software is built which in turn would make it simpler to understand. I also wanted to demonstrate everything I was saying so everyone could follow along and understand what I was talking about.
